Playing online with friends

Hello, I'm trying to play online with some friends but some weird things are happening.

We are 4 and we can rarely play all together so, most of the time, we play as 3. Nothing severe here, but when a player stops playing I noticed that he's controlled by an AI, which acts strangely sometimes. One of my friends went from 15k to -20k while another one lost 2 of his 3 ships, no idea why, stuff that's really frustrating, as you can see. Automatic routes still work, though.


So, can someone explain how the AI works, and if there's a way to disable it? (Also the game freezes sometimes, if someone could tell me how to fix that, it'd be great!)
